EMS for weight loss: does an EMS suit burn fat?

Vendor sites promise 500 calories in 20 minutes. The published measurements are far more modest.

What has actually been measured

In a crossover study of 19 men, light resistance exercise with 85 Hz whole-body EMS used about 17% more energy than the same exercise without it.[1] A second study found that one intense session raised resting metabolic rate for up to 72 hours, a net effect of about 460 kcal.[2] That is real, and it is roughly the energy in one large snack.

The “300 to 500 kcal per 20-minute session” figure that appears on many vendor sites is not a published measurement.

What trials show for body fat

The 2021 meta-analysis found no significant effect on body fat.[3] The 2023 meta-analysis found a small, significant reduction.[4] Several of the fat-loss trials were confounded by diet or protein supplements. In a head-to-head trial, conventional resistance training produced more fat loss than EMS.[5]

What the FDA says

The FDA states that no EMS device has been cleared for weight loss, girth reduction or for obtaining “rock hard” abs.[6] Any brand that advertises its suit for weight loss is going beyond what its clearance covers.

Where EMS does help

EMS builds and preserves muscle, and muscle matters when you lose weight, because dieting alone costs muscle as well as fat. Used alongside a calorie deficit, EMS can help you keep the muscle you have. That is a useful role. It is not the same as burning fat.
