What Katalyst is
Katalyst, from Seattle, was the first whole-body EMS suit cleared by the FDA for over-the-counter home use. Its clearance, K190966, dates from February 2020, and it later served as the predicate device for Visionbody’s own clearance.[3] The current Gen4 Training System costs $2,999.[1]
Technology
The FDA summary lists 13 output channels, programme frequencies from 1 to 105 Hz, and a pulse width of 250 to 375 microseconds.[2] The impulse pack is wireless. The electrodes are not dry: the box includes a spray bottle and two base layers, and you wet the pads before each session.[1] That is the biggest practical difference from the dry suits in this comparison. The app is the product
Katalyst’s strength is coaching. The app leads you through classes and sets the programme for you, and reviewers consistently praise it. The cost of that approach is lock-in: it requires an iPhone or iPad with iOS 16 or later, and Katalyst states that a membership is required with your initial purchase, at $49 a month or $35 to $41 a month on longer plans.[1]
What it costs over three years
With the cheapest 36-month plan, the total comes to about $4,259. Paying monthly it is about $4,763. That is more than twice the three-year cost of Visionbody. See the cost guide.
Check availability before you order
When we checked on 20 September 2026, the Gen4 product page still asked for full payment as a preorder with an “estimated delivery in Q1 2026”.[1] That date had passed. Ask Katalyst for a current delivery date before you pay.
Who should buy it
Katalyst suits iPhone users who want to be led through every session and accept a monthly fee for it. If you want dry electrodes, Android support or no subscription, read Visionbody vs Katalyst.
How Katalyst scores
- Stimulation technology, 7.5: Wireless with 13 channels and a parameter range published in its FDA summary. No points for dry electrodes: the suit must be sprayed and worn over a base layer. The pulse-width range, 250 to 375 µs, is narrower than Visionbody’s.
- Control and software, 8.0: The guided class library is the best in the group. It is self-guided only and needs an iPhone or iPad. Android is not supported.
- Comfort, hygiene and care, 4.0: Wetting the electrodes and wearing a base layer add preparation time to every session. We did not find washing instructions or a size range on the product page.
- Safety and certification, 7.0: FDA 510(k) K190966 verified, cleared for over-the-counter use. No ISO 13485 or CE information published.
- Cost and ownership, 5.5: Public price and a 3-year warranty on the pack, but a membership is compulsory. On 20 September 2026 the product page still showed preorder wording with an estimated delivery in Q1 2026.

Verdict
Katalyst is a well-documented system with the strongest class library. You pay for it twice: in preparation time with the spray bottle, and in a membership that lifts the three-year cost above $4,200.
